History
The OceanSafe journey started in 2019, when today’s CEO Manuel Schweizer founded the company in Bern, Switzerland. Manuel had previously spent more than 6 years on R&D on sustainable textiles. Shortly thereafter, the Germany subsidiary in Krefeld followed suit.
His objective: To convert his textile inventions, expertise and know-how into market-ready technology for a broad range of the market.
Our clients
OceanSafe’s clients are textile brands and retailers. We help them develop and manufacture fully circular finished products.
Our solution: Making products circular
OceanSafe technology solves the environmental problems of the textile industry. We help our customers manufacture biodegradable, compostable and toxin-free textiles. We follow the Cradle to Cradle product design philosophy.
Brands and retailers develop unique products based on the OceanSafe Textile Component Kit. The Kit includes textile materials, components, trims and even textile chemistry. It covers more than 80% of today’s market applications. Read more here
Finished products based on the Kit - apparel, home or technical textiles - carry the OceanSafe Quality Seal.

The finished product must be compliant with all OceanSafe standards.
OceanSafe standards
All products marked with the OceanSafe Certified quality seal comply with all of the following standards:
- Fully circular. Never any waste.
- Biodegradable, compostable and safe for the biological cycle
- Toxin-free from raw material to finished product
- Cradle to Cradle Certified Gold or higher
- No compromise on quality, durability and comfort
OceanSafe requires brands & retailers to establish a take-back system.
OceanSafe certified value chains
OceanSafe is not a manufacturer - we provide our clients access to existing, fully certified textile value chains. All products from the OceanSafe Textile Component Kit are made at certified partner factories.
OceanSafe circular synthetic fibers
OceanSafe’s core innovation is our development of proprietary biodegradable synthetic fibers and yarns. Our technology is highly industrially scalable.
Our synthetic fibers combine advantages of natural fibers (e.g. cotton) and synthetics (e.g. polyester).
The final objective? To replace cotton and polyester with a fully circular synthetic alternative.
